It seems like there are a thousand customizable options whenever you buy anything online these days, and if I’m being honest, it can get a bit overwhelming.
Sometimes, I’d rather not have to do the research on which toothpaste is really going to clean my teeth the best.
Well, I went to purchase a canvas print the other day for my wife and there were, again, a ton of options.
Thankfully, I actually had a ton of fun choosing each of the customizations on her present, probably a little bit because it was a photo I had taken.
When you’re choosing a canvas print, you want to know exactly how your photography is going to look, so here are all of your canvas printing options explained.
Canvas Print Border Colors

Just like a canvas painting, there are borders on your canvas print. While I’ve traditionally just chosen a solid color to use as my border color, modern printing technologies provide us way more options than just this.
As photographers, we are constantly worried about the final print. We take a lot of time establishing our shot, so when our clients print our photography after they’ve cropped the photo, sometimes it hurts.
That’s where a mirror wrap comes in handy. Essentially, it ensures that your entire photo is printed on the front of your canvas while still echoing the color theme by replicating the edges of the photo to put around the border.
This is one of my favorite canvas print options available today because it’s relatively new and wasn’t around when I was a kid.
The image wrap, on the other hand, is the more traditional canvas printing method. Here, your image is simply printed on the entire canvas, including the border. The effect, though, is a cropped image.
So, if you know you’re going to be using the image wrap on your finished product, then you can make the necessary adjustments during the shoot.
Canvas Print Finishes
There are a ton of finishes that you can choose for your canvas prints, as Pictorem Custom Wall Art points out.
There are traditional finishes, like matte or glossy, and some nontraditional finishes, like vintage and iridescent.
Matte is one of my favorite canvas finishes because it’s so traditional every photograph looks good on it. Plus, you can put a canvas with a matte finish in any environment and it will blend right in.

But, my favorite canvas finish CanvasHQ offers is vintage, which replicates the old fashioned burlap sack look by including natural fibers in the finish.
It’s a rustic, raw look that looks like a million bucks if you ask me!
Canvas Print Frame Depth

Many people discount the importance of the frame depth, but if you have a particularly large piece of artwork or a very specific place your canvas needs to fit, it comes in handy.
Normal canvases, like one you would buy from Walmart Photo, is 1.5” thick, but CanvasHQ also offers .75” and 2”.
Thinner frames are ideal for smaller prints or prints that will be hung in tight spaces, like a hallway. Thicker frames, on the other hand, are more dramatic, making them ideal for large-format prints or prints that are hanging on a large wall. The thicker frame gives the print much more visual heft.
Canvas Print Image Effects
