Canon is making a bold move in an increasingly competitive market, as they recently announced price cuts on 33 of their high-end lenses. These cuts will be between $30 and $800, and while L glass will still target people with fairly deep pockets, price drops such as this will no doubt be welcomed by serious photographers.
Canon still dominates the DSLR market, despite stiff competition from Nikon and the recent shift in consumer attention from big, heavy DSLRs to compact and often equally capable mirrorless cameras. Professional filmmakers are also long-time Canon users, so there's no reason to think they're in any danger in that segment of the market.
(Success Tip: The easiest way to learn photography when you have little time to spare)
We see this as a very smart move by the manufacturer in making their upper echelon more affordable, especially since trends toward using ever-more-capable smartphones for everyday photography will undoubtedly affect the entry-level DSLR markets for all manufacturers. No matter what the motivation for the price slashing, it's really good news for us photographers and videographers.
Among the highlights of these price cuts, you will find the 24-70mm f/2.8L II is now available for $1,900, the widely loved 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II for $2,100 and the new 16-35mm f/4L IS for just $1,100.
