Canon EOS RP Hands-On Review

Canon EOS RP Review

The Canon EOS RP dropped exactly one year ago and we haven’t done a its full review yet and figured it’s time.
I’ve found that the Canon EOS RP is rarely talked about in photography circles, but everyone that owns one raves about it constantly.
And I can see why. Let’s dive into our Canon EOS RP review to show you why you may just find yourself needing one. We have an extensive article about Canon EOS R on PhotographyTalk.com, check it out.

Canon EOS RP Specs

Matt WhoIsMatt Johnson is a resident funny-guy photographer on YouTube, and his perspective on this camera, considering he’s a Sony lover himself, is classic.
The Canon RP is the lightest mirrorless camera in the EOS lineup to date. It features splendid 4K video, powerful low-light shooting, and an incredibly fast AF system.

Other Canon EOS RP Specs Include:

  • 26.2MP CMOS sensor
  • 4K video
  • 4fps burst mode
  • Digic 8 processor
  • 2.36M-dot viewfinder
  • 1.04M-dot fully-articulated touchscreen
  • Twin command dials
  • 1.1 lbs
  • 250-shot battery life

Canon EOS RP Body & Design

The Canon EOS RP is shockingly small for a camera with its capabilities. It’s crafted with polycarbonate and alloy, to combat the feeling you would otherwise have that this camera is easily breakable.
There’s a fun optional grip extender, which would definitely be helpful if you’re going to be shooting with large lenses.

One of the best assets of the design of the Canon EOS RP is obviously its fully-articulated screen, which is capable of selfies and street photography alike.
But, despite all of the upgrades, this camera still feels familiar. And importantly, despite its small size, it never feels uncomfortable to hold.

Canon EOS RP Build & Handling

The Canon EOS RP is rather comfortable to handle, with a deep grip and twin command dials.
The controls are generally laid out appropriately and it’s light enough to carry around all day.
My biggest complaint about the Canon RP build is that my pinky hangs off the bottom of the grip. But, all-in-all, this is a rather small complaint.
The touchscreen, which features 1.04M-dots is incredible. I’ve used it for vlogging, selfies, street photography and basically any shoot where I needed my eyes off of my screen.

Canon EOS RP Video Performance

This video by DSI Pictures actually came out before the Canon RP did, and it showcases everything I love about the smooth 4K video this camera creates.
Unfortunately, it is cropped 4K video.
Of Two Lands actually shows what this cropped 4K video looks like in practice.
Essentially, you probably won’t be purchasing this camera if you’re a videographer, but if you’re a photographer who occasionally shoots video, then this is more than enough.

Canon EOS RP Price

The Canon EOS RP is available on Amazon for $1,000 at the moment, which is $300 off.
Instead of buying a new Canon EOS RP, you can purchase a used one off of MPB for $925. And while that amount of savings may not seem like much, it’s enough to buy a decent tripod or perhaps even a used lens!
If it were me, I'd put the savings toward investing in a high-quality memory card. The EOS RP isn't a video master, but you still want fast read/write speeds to take advantage of the video options it offers.

I use ProGrade memory cards and have for quite some time, and I can attest to their speed, build quality, durability, and performance. I use a ProGrade UHS-II memory card in this camera and it has proven to be an invaluable asset for my photography and video recording. And with different sized cards to fit any budget, there's really no excuse not to upgrade your memory card experience!

Plus, if you buy used from an outfit like MPB, you know that the item you get in the mail is exactly what you expect. That’s because MPB grades their gear with precision so there’s no question whether an item is in like-new condition, good condition, or somewhere in between.
Though the EOS RP isn’t a perfect camera by any means, it’s a great option for photographers of all kinds that want a small, portable, mirrorless camera.
