11 Slick Moves That Put the Sony Alpha A65 DLSR Camera Near the Front of the Pack

1. Sony is definitely working hard to overcome Canon as the world’s #1 camera manufacturer—and the new Alpha A65 DSLR is proof of Sony’s effort. It may be a “basic” version of the new Alpha A77, but there is nothing basic about the A65’s features and capabilities and its highly competitive price point (see #12 below). 2. You’ll notice the excellence of the Sony A65 as soon as you hold it in your hands. Where you grip the body has exceptional ergonomics, with a natural shaping of the rubber surface for your hand and a large thumb grip on the rear of the camera.
3. Sony made sure the A65 included the company’s newly engineered OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF), with a 2.359-million dot resolution. Its primary improvement over older LCD electronic viewfinders is chromatic aberrations don’t appear at the pixel level. This is because it is unnecessary for RGB to be seen at each pixel level. The OLED EVF on the Sony A65 is automatically available as soon as the camera’s eye-sensor detects your eye at the viewfinder.
4. Not of minor importance to many photographers is the ease of use of buttons and menus—and the Sony Alpha A65 delivers. First, the camera has such an array of easily accessible external buttons that you won’t have to spend much time using the menus. You may discover that you like the menu layout, however, because it’s so straightforward and intuitive.
5. For a consumer-market DSLR, the Sony Alpha A65 has quite a power-packed sensor: APS-C-sized, 24.3MP Exmor CMOS. Not only does it reproduce a highly acceptable amount of detail, but also it places the A65 ahead of its competitor because of those 24.3 megapixels.
6. Third-party tests revealed that the Sony A65 is a very fast operating camera, highlighted by its continuous shooting mode (in JPEGs) of 10fps for 17 frames. Even in RAW mode, the camera still captures 10fps, but for just 14 frames. Shutter response and focusing operate at very high speeds compared to many competitors. Shutter response is less than 0.05 seconds. Shutter response at wide focus is 0.1 and 0.15 for full zoom focus.
7. The Alpha A65 DSLR is also built with Sony’s Translucent Mirror Technology. With a stationary mirror, the AF system is always working and not forced to pause, as it would in cameras with flipping mirrors.
8. The various imaging technologies that Sony has built into the Alpha A65 results in an image quality every bit as good as the larger Alpha A77, the top of Sony’s Alpha line. As to be expected in a camera at this price point, the A65 produces a moderate amount of noise to ISO 400, and becomes more apparent as the sensitivity is pushed.
9. Sony has given the Alpha A65 DSLR its popular and consumer-tested 15-point auto-focus system. Various tests support its reputation for very fast and precise operations, especially when shooting stationary subjects/scenes.
10. The Sony Alpha A65 features all the video capabilities Sony can provide, including the highest quality resolution at 1080p full-HD at 60p, and stereo audio recording. The design of this camera makes it very easy to handle during video shooting, since you can position it at your waist or chest with the use of the tilting screen or the LCD below.
11. The Sony Alpha A65 DSLR Camera is available as the body-only from B&H Photo Video for $899.99. With the standard 18–55 zoom kit lens, the A65 is priced at $999.99.
