How To Photography: Semi-Professional Photography Opportunities for Stay-at-Home Moms

Although most married couples work a combination of full-time and part-time jobs, which produce dual incomes, there are still many stay-at-home mothers. Many of them are passionate about digital photography, or are interested in becoming a photographer, and utilizing their skills to earn additional family income. Learn more about photography ideas at home on our website PhotographyTalk.com.

Advantage #1: Flexible Schedule

Because Mom has a busy schedule, with many tasks, errands and responsibilities during the day, it’s not easy to find a part-time job with the flexibility she needs. That’s why earning additional income, as a semi-professional photographer, can be an excellent alternative. Some days and times of the day are less hectic: the children are at school, the youngest are taking naps, etc.

During these small windows of time, Mom can continue to educate herself with a perusal of the newest how-to photography articles on PhotographyTalk.com as well as using the Forum to ask questions and view the many how-to videos available there.

Mom can also access the many online courses, workshops and tutorials that The Picture Perfect School of Photography, MyPhotoSchool and LoveThatShot offer, which are all PhotographyTalk vendor partners.

Stay-at-home mothers also have the flexibility to schedule digital photography assignments during specific times of the week, especially when her husband is available to supervise the kids. Because there isn’t the pressure of working a full-time job, Mom can book shoots a couple of late afternoons or evenings a week and Saturday morning.

Advantage #2: Portfolio Subject Matter

Although there is no detailed data about what kind of digital photography assignments stay-at-home moms seek, it appears that most of their work is portraits and weddings. They don’t have to look very far for subject matter to create a good portfolio: They spend plenty of time with their children throughout the day, which also become opportunities to photograph them.

The children of friends and neighbors, who are also stay-at-home moms, are also easily accessible during the same times of the day. A neighborly backyard party is another excellent opportunity to capture casual portraits of children and children with their parents. In addition, any neighborhood is filled with people with a great variety of hobbies, which are often enjoyed during the evening hours or weekends. They are excellent subject matter for lifestyle portraits, which gives a semi-professional portfolio an even better mix of images.

Advantage #3: Network of Contacts

Typically, stay-at-home moms are members of a network of other stay-at-home moms, which provides an immediate and easily accessible market for Mom’s semi-professional photography business. All these families have growing children and virtually all the parents will value and cherish excellent portraits of them. Plus, they are more likely to hire someone they know.

Every stay-at-home mom in the network is also a member of two extended families: hers and her husband’s. Families have weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, etc. All of which is great business for the semi-professional and is easily reached with inexpensive marketing. Often, word-of-mouth advertising does much of the work, actually resulting in no-cost or low-cost marketing: distributing business cards through the stay-at-home mom network, utilizing social media and maintaining a simple portfolio Web site.

The stay-at-home mom working as a semi-professional photographer can also utilize her children to help spread the word about her services. This is not to suggest that children should become “salespeople” actively seeking business from their friends. Instead, the marketing tactic here is subtler. The children can show Mom’s great photos of them on their Facebook pages or other social media; display photos on the inside doors of their school lockers; place a portrait photo on the cover of a notebook; or use one of Mom’s photo as a computer monitor or cell phone background or screen saver. Kids like nothing better than to view and share photos; and when they see Mom’s excellent photos of her children, their friends, they’ll ask their parents to have Mom photograph them too.

Advantage #4: Pricing

The pricing of semi-professional photographers’ work is a tricky and somewhat controversial subject among professional/commercial photographers. Many of the full-timers think that when semi-professionals charge less than the market will bear they are undervaluing portraits, weddings, etc., thus limiting everyone’s revenue.

No doubt this is a reality on occasion and in some geographic markets. The advantage for the stay-at-home mom that is also a semi-professional photographer is that many, if not most, of her clients are a secondary market. They wouldn’t typically seek the services of a full-time professional for any number of reasons: cost, convenience, etc. The semi-professional is able to set pricing according to the market available to her; and she will receive more work from it if her prices are less than the full-time professional.

6 Creative Photography Tricks You Can Try at Home

I'm sure you're like me and know what it's like to get into a creative rut.

It's the worst feeling because it can be so incredibly frustrating - and hard to get out of.

But sometimes all you need is a few simple tips for inspiration to get your creative juices flowing again. Learn more about creative photography ideas at home on our website PhotographyTalk.com.

The video above is all about easy, at-home photography tricks to help you get more creative photos.

In it, Jessica Kobeissi shows just how simple it is to make something that's unique and unusual.

Give the video a quick view, and for details on each trick, see below.

Rain Effect

It's easy to make it rain with your camera...

Just grab a spray bottle, fill it with water, and find an empty picture frame.

Remove the back of the frame, secure the glass in place, and spray the front with the water bottle.

As you can see, the effect is quick eye-catching!

You'd never know by looking at this photo that it was staged using nothing more than an old photo frame and a spray bottle!

Fairy Lights

That old strand of lights you have in your garage isn't just for holiday decorations...

It can also be used to add interesting lighting effects to your photos!

lights2 image YouTube Screenshot/Jessica Kobeissi

As you can see in the screenshot above, adding the fairy lights to this portrait adds gorgeous blobs of light that make the photo more unique.

Just have the model hold the lights in front of their face, or for a more depth-inducing effect, have the model hold one end of the lights while you hold the other.

By placing the lights in the field of view of your lens, you can get gorgeous bokeh effects that elevate your portraits to the next level.

Lace Tablecloth

Lights aren't the only household item you can use to add interesting effects to your photos.

If you have a lace tablecloth handy, just have the model hold it up in front of their face as you take the photo.

The sheer quality of the lace means that you still get a nice view of the model.

But if the tablecloth has interesting designs on it, like the one in the screenshot above, you get beautiful, three-dimensional effects that make the photo something extra special. You can also view another post about photo ideas at home.

Prism

A prism is another simple object that can have complex effects on the photos you create.

Since it refracts light, it will add beautiful light effects to your images, as seen below.

prism2 image YouTube Screenshot/Jessica Kobeissi

Just hold the prism in front of your lens as you shoot.

Move the prism left, right, up, and down, and adjust its distance from the lens to change the effects it creates.

The key is to play around to see what works best for your creative vision.

Chandelier Crystal

Like a prism, a chandelier crystal is a fun and easy tool to use to add visual effects to your photos.

Again, since it refracts light, holding the crystal in front of your lens generates beautiful effects.

As you can see in the image above, holding the crystal on the bottom left side of the frame adds a touch of whimsy to this shot.

It also gives this portrait a little more depth and uniqueness that help it stand out. And all it took was a simple crystal!

CD Rainbow

cd1 image YouTube Screenshot/Jessica Kobeissi

I know some younger photographers might be wondering what a CD is, but it's a round thing we used to use to save stuff like photos.

The bottom of the CD reflects light, and when it does, it creates a rainbow.

cd2 image YouTube Screenshot/Jessica Kobeissi

Like the other objects on this list, it's easy to use a CD to get this effect.

Turn on your phone's flashlight, shine it on the CD, and hold both in front of your camera lens (you'll need to put your camera on a tripod and use its timer).

Then, work the angles of the light and the CD until you get the desired effect where you want it.

As you can see in the image above, it's another way to create a photo that's more visually interesting.

And with that, you have six super easy photography tricks to use to improve your photography!

10 Unique Photography Tricks Anyone Can Do At Home

Unique Photography Tricks

Sometimes we can get caught up in the complexities of photography and forget that it's a fun, creative experience.

And part of having a fun, creative experience is exploring unique ways to add a little pizzaz to the photos you take.

Our friends over at COOPH - the Cooperative of Photography - just released a new video that outlines 10 ways to make your photos better. Learn more about photography ideas at home on our website PhotographyTalk.com.

The fun part is that each trick is unique and it's something you can do right from the comfort of your own home!

Check out the video and a summary of each trick below:

Make Your Own Glitter

All you need is some aluminum foil and some scissors, and you've got a recipe to make your own glitter.

Just grab a handful and sprinkle it above your subject, and you can get a cool effect like the one shown above. You can also view another post about photo ideas at home.

Go Close

Not all of us have a macro lens handy...

But that shouldn't stop you from taking close-up shots!

COOPH suggests you use a magnifying glass to create a quick and easy macro look.

And judging from the shot above, it looks pretty darn cool!

Hack Your Flash

Artificial lighting gets a bad wrap sometimes.

Sure, it can be on the harsh side, but there's things you can do to make it emit more interesting light.

All you need to do is make a DIY diffuser out of semi-rigid foam, and you can create beautiful lighting effects like you see above.

Underwater Selfie

You can create an underwater selfie at home with nothing more than a GoPro, a selfie stick, and a fish tank.

Just set the camera to 30fps burst mode and rapidly dunk the camera into the water.

The action of the camera entering the water will force the water to the sides to create the awesome underwater selfie shown above.

Cool huh?

Shoot With Fruit

shootwithfruit min image YouTube Screenshot/COOPH

I know it sounds a little crazy, but shooting with fruit can actually render some very eye-catching shots.

As seen above, a collection of different fruits with various shapes, colors, and sizes gives you an image with tons of visual interest.

Add in some water for the addition of some splashes, set your camera to a fast shutter speed, and drop the fruit into the camera's field of view.

Who knew something so simple could be so beautiful?

Create Lens Flare

lensflare min image YouTube Screenshot/COOPH

Adding a little lens flare to your photos is a pretty simple process to do in-camera.

Just hold a lighter in front of your lens (not too close to the lens, of course), frame up your shot, and voila, lens flare!

If you don't fancy holding a lighter in front of your lens, try a small flashlight aimed down the barrel of your lens for a similar result.

Warp the Perspective

perspective min image YouTube Screenshot/COOPH

One of the simplest DIY home photography tricks you can try is to warp the perspective of the shot with water.

Simply fill a clear glass with water, place it in front of the subject, and you've got an eye-catching addition to your shots.

For an even trippier experience, flip the image upside down as seen above!

Fake the Background

fakebackground min image YouTube Screenshot/COOPH

Create a whimsical shot by placing your subject in front of a fake background.

Place a figurine in front of a large image, frame a tight shot on the scene, and you have the makings for a fun photo.

The image above was created by simply opening a photo book and placing it behind the toy. Pretty simple, right?!

Shoot Through Water Drops

shootthroughwaterdrops min image YouTube Screenshot/COOPH

What do you get when you combine colorful candy, a sheet of plexiglass, and a few water drops?

Crazy, mind-bending images like the one above!

Shooting through water drops has the same effect of warping the perspective that shooting through a glass of water does.

But in this case, you get more bang for your buck because each water droplet magnifies the candy below!

Back Up Your Images

Of course, after all that fun DIY photography you'll want to ensure your images are safe.

Be sure to back everything up, recharge your gear, clean up, and you'll be ready to go for next time!
