Canon R5 Monster is Real - IBIS and 8K Are Coming

Well, the Canon R5 rumors - many of them, anyway - seem to have been extremely accurate.
Yesterday, the camera giant confirmed that they're working on the Canon EOS R5 and that it will have, among other things, in-camera image stabilization and 8K video capabilities.

As I discuss in my Canon EOS R5 rumor video below, the name of the camera, which was originally rumored to be the EOS RS, is a little confusing given that it includes a number and none of the other EOS R cameras do. Perhaps the 5 indicates that the camera will have a 50-something megapixel sensor?? Who knows!
What we do know is that this will be the high-powered, pro-spec camera that Canon shooters have been lusting after ever since the EOS R debuted in 2018.
In addition to a brand-new sensor, the R5 will also sport a new processing engine.
This combination of sensor and processor - there's no confirmation of how many megapixels the sensor will be yet - will enable the camera to shoot at 20fps using the silent shutter and 12fps using the mechanical shutter.
On the video front, Canon confirmed that 8K video will be available, but they did not expound upon what sort of crop there might be or the frame rates that will be available. Whatever the case, downsampling from 8K will result in some crazy high-quality 4K footage and high-resolution stills captured from video.
As I mentioned earlier, the R5 will have IBIS - the first Canon camera to do so. When used with a stabilized RF lens, you get even more stabilization goodness, which, according to Canon will "allow photographers to handhold the camera in light levels not previously imagined."
Rounding out the confirmed features are dual card slots, which support automatic transfer of images directly to Canon's new cloud platform.
Canon also notes that the EOS R5 will support "efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability, and reliability."

As if all that weren't enough, Canon also confirmed that they have seven RF lenses on tap to be released in 2020 alone (only two of which have been announced, as shown above). The RF lens lineup is already one of the best - if not the best - in the industry, and it appears that Canon has no desire to let anyone else catch up to the quality and selection of lenses they've developed.
No release date for the R5 was mentioned in the Canon press release, but Canon did confirm that a preview of the R5 would be available at WPPI in Las Vegas, which is February 25-27, 2020.
I've hit up WPPI many times in the past, and if I can get there again this year, you will find me at the Canon booth!
