8 of the Latest Rumors About New Canon DSLR Cameras and Lenses

1. From Canon’s perspective, Nikon may have stolen the early 2012 thunder with the announcement of the D800 and D4 DSLRs, but experts and photographers believe the Canon EOS 5D X is the most-anticipated new camera for 2012. An update of the EOS 5D Mark II to a Mark III also has digital photographers’ ears carefully glued to the rumor mill.

  1. As of the writing of this PhotographyTalk article (mid-February 2012), the latest word on the specs of the EOS 5D X includes a 45-megapixel sensor that matches the pixel size in the new Canon PowerShot G1X. This enormous sensor will reportedly be paired with one Canon DIGIC 5+ and one DIGIC 4 processor. The 61-point auto-focus system will emulate the system in the 1DX in many respects. Other specs’ speculations are 3.4fps and a normal ISO sensitivity range of 100–6,400, expandable to 50–12.800.

  1. Rumors persist that the EOS 5D Mark III will have a 22-megapixel sensor, the same combination of image processors and the same 61-point AF system as the 5D X, but a faster shooter at 6.9fps. ISO sensitivity will also be greater, with a standard range of 100–25,600, which can be customized to 50–51,200. One source claims the 5D Mark III will produce the best video of any EOS camera. Other features could be a new battery grip with a joystick and GPS capabilities.

  1. Reports have both cameras being priced at more than $3,000, but another source states the EOS 5D Mark III will be $2,700.

  1. The experts and bloggers that track these information leaks now project a February 28th announcement date for both cameras. Late March or early April is the expected ship date.

  1. Replacements for the Canon EOS Rebel T3i and 60D are supposedly also in the pipeline, tentatively given the names of “Rebel T4i” and “70D.” Announcements for these DSLRs could coincide with Photokina 2012, September 18–September 23.

  1. Although there is no reliable information available six months before Photokina, many speculate that Canon will also announce its mirrorless camera at the same time.

  1. In terms of new Canon lenses, the most reliable information seems to indicate a 24–70mm f/2.8L II and 35mm f/1.4L II, due to be shipped during April 2012. There have also been online discussions about an EF 24mm f/2.8 and EF 50mm f/1.2L II, and a 28mm as well.
